Flaine - March 2011
Just about to leave after a week in Flaine. Margaret, (with her new helmet!), Sophie and her friend Laura, and myself - we all had a great time. We stayed at the Residence La Foret .. which was very comfortable and good value apartments, especially as we had and used a south facing balcony. The weather was simply fabulous - gloriously sunny and clear the whole week. We had booked relatively late and got a good deal for a week's self catering.
The ski area is great, but the snow has been limited since the beginning of the year in the northern Alps but the pistes in the Grand Massif area were in great shape (bar Allemande) all week. So we had some lovely long red runs. I beat the main gondola down too ... Margaret helped in the experiment ... and it was afternoon and a bit slushy... would have taken another three minutes off, I reckon, in the morning!
Flaine's ski area is located in a vast snowy bowl, with views out over the mountain panorama of the Haute Savoie from the top of the main cable car at around 2,460 metres.
It is linked into the Grand Massif ski area, which can boast 165 miles of pistes served by 75 lifts. The bowl of Flaine offers the widest range of skiing but although access to the resorts which make up the rest of the area is good coming back is very limited - there is one crucial lift to make it into Flaine... I think it is called Vernant.
I covered most, if not every single run, (I did chicken out of the heavily moguled black), including the two drags above the Stade and also a few times up the Lindars Nord chairlift - the highest point of the lift system at 2,500 metres.
From here it is possible to take a black or red run to head over to the Lapiaz drag or down to the DMC Grand Platières cable car at Flaine Forum, at the top of which you get stunning views of Mont Blanc.
